… thanks to an earthquake that demolished the old natural harbor in 1931. The earthquake caused new ground to be brought up from the harbor, greatly enlarging the area of the city. Everything was re-built in accordance with earthquake proof building codes. Napier claims the world’s largest remaining collection of buildings in the Art Deco style.
After a quick drive through town, we took a long bus ride through a scenic area with sheep, cattle, vineyards, mountains and streams. Everything was very green.
Our destination was the Maori Waimarama Marae or or ancestral home. Led by our two Maori guides who were from this marae, we were met by a warrior who quickly decided that our intentions were honorable. The chief welcomed us in Maori on behalf of his people, and we were serenaded. The songs were melodious and beautiful.
It was an uplifting experience. The Maori demonstrated their traditional musical instruments, of which there are many; showed us their ancestral house where photographs of the deceased members of the family are displayed; and taught us to perform simple moves using the poi. The warrior showed us moves using various Maori weapons, and Frank excelled at a hand and eye coordination game, at which he was declared the winner.
Following the visit to the marae, our guide took us on a short tour of Napier to see various Art Deco buildings, both commercial buildings and private homes. He dropped us off in town and after walking around, we walked back to the ship.
And what a nice surprise we had when we got back to the pier! A large group of antique cars we had briefly glimpsed in town in the morning had driven to the pier to see the ship off. The drivers were all in period clothes from the 30s, and were accompanied by a band singing and playing tunes of the era. What a send-off!
Back on board, we relaxed in the Thermal Suite. Pictured here are the Thallasotherapy pool and the heated ceramic lounges, my personal favorite.
Dinner and the show were followed by a Dessert Extravaganza – no calories if you only take pictures!
